We provide foods containing complex carbohydrates, folate (folic acid), magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids--all of which have shown to decrease symptoms of depression.
Foods such as broccoli and oatmeal are excellent sources of complex carbohydrates. As complex carbohydrates may boost serotonin activity in the brain, we've included a delicious Broccoli Soup along with steel-cut oatmeal.
People who are depressed are often deficient in folic acid. This vitamin appears to reduce the high levels of homocysteine associated with depression. We've included folate-rich sources such as the dried beans in the Bean Cuisine Soup Mix and in the soybeans found in the Rocamojo Coffee. (They'll also get a healthy dose from the Broccoli soup).
The magnesium found in spinach, chocolate, and almonds may ease depression symptoms by acting as a muscle relaxant. The sources we chose are dark chocolate and almonds.
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega 3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid that is the building block of human brain tissue. Low levels of DHA have been associated with depression. For this reason, we've included Smoked Salmon--a fantastic source of omega-3 fatty acids.
Soy has been shown to help elevate mood. Our crunchy soy crisps make a delicious depression-fighting snack.
